6 Dos and Don’ts for a Flawless Winter Maternity Photo Shoot

Winter maternity photo shoots are gaining popularity, and many women around the world enjoy capturing their burgeoning bellies against a snowy backdrop. In order to make sure your photo shoot is absolutely spectacular, here are six things to do – and not do – in order to make it happen.

Three Things You Should Always Do

Before diving into the things you should avoid, it is first important to consider three things that you should always do in order to truly enjoy your shoot.

  1. Dress for the occasion. If it is cold outside, but you really want a photo in the snow, make sure you dress for the occasion. Wear a hat, gloves, a scarf, a heavy coat – whatever it takes to keep yourself warm. Your maternity photographer in Toronto can give you some ideas about what types of clothing work best. Layers are always great because you can add and remove them as necessary to stay comfortable.
  1. Include your family. You should always include your spouse in some of your photos, and if you have other children, make them a part of the session, too. A snowball fight is a great idea for a maternity photo shoot, but so is a family snowman-building session. You can keep things as fun or as traditional as you like.
  1. Try different poses. A couple of shots will likely be of you on your own, so make sure that you alternate poses. Sitting, standing, leaning – all of these can lend to different types of photographs.

Three Things to Avoid

Just as there are some things you should always do when it comes to Toronto maternity photography, there are a few things you should avoid.

  1. Avoid dangerous weather. If your outdoor shoot is threatened by freezing rain and icy conditions, you should never take chances. A beautiful photograph is not worth the risk of falling, so either move the shoot indoors or reschedule whenever possible. In the case of inclement weather, your Toronto maternity photographer will understand.
  1. Don’t tilt your head back. Tilting your head backward is never flattering, so when it comes time for your solo shots, either gaze downward toward your belly or push your chin slightly up and out while looking at the photographer head-on. Your photographer can help you make sure that you literally put your best face forward.
  1. Don’t be afraid of the stretchmarks. Oftentimes, some of the best maternity photography in Toronto is the result of a mother cradling her naked belly. Pregnant women have stretchmarks and other blemishes, and you should not feel ashamed of these. Your photographer can edit out the blemishes later, but no rule says it is necessary. Every part of you – stretchmarks and all – is a testament to the life you are about to bring into the world.

Maternity photography is often as unpredictable as the winter weather, so the number one thing you should always do is roll with the punches. Toronto maternity photography is incredibly flexible these days, and there are a number of ideas that you can utilize when it comes to capturing your memories.
